Royal Charter is the most prestigious means of incorporating an organisation as a legal entity and is now days a rare and significant event. In the case of professional bodies, it is reserved for those that are considered to be pre-eminent in their field, have a sound record of achievement and represent a body of knowledge that is unique and not covered by other professional bodies.
The Sovereign - Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II - grants the Royal Charter on recommendation of the Privy Council, which has about 500 members - primarily former and current members of both Houses of Parliament, including all Cabinet Ministers. It is led by a president who is also Leader of the House of Commons, the current post holder being The Rt Hon Robin Cook MP.
The Privy Council is one of the oldest parts of the machinery of government, dating back to the earliest days of the monarchy, when its members were appointed by the King or Queen to advise on all matters of state.
Throughout the 1990's the Institute of Management pursued its long-term aim to achieve Chartered Status and from April 1, 2002 achieved that most prestigious and significant goal. The creation of the Chartered Management Institute, by award of Royal Charter, endorses the professional standing of management.
"As the champion of management we shape and support the managers of tomorrow. By sharing intelligent insights and setting standards in management development we help to deliver results in a dynamic world."
-- Mary Chapman, Director General of the Institute

Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM)
ILM - First for Leadership & Management
ILM
has over half a century of experience in management development
and recognition of achievement through accreditation and membership.
It provides distinctive and innovative services to support all
individuals and organisations in building their capability in leadership
and management, through membership, qualifications, awards and
representation.
ILM is a professional body which supports national objectives
to ensure that the UK is able to develop leaders and managers of
the future, with a particular focus on first line and middle levels.
Offering membership services together with leadership and management
qualifications and as part of the City & Guilds Group, ILM
represents a strategic initiative to support excellence in leadership
and management in all sectors and to develop new and appropriate
services for organisations and individuals to develop capability.
Gary Ince ILM Chief Executive, affirms that ILM has “nailed
its colours firmly to it’s mast” by including the word ‘leadership’ in
it’s title. “A lot of organisations have programmes
to inspire leadership but they don’t have the confidence
to put it in their name”. Gary Ince goes on to say “We
want to capture leadership themes and turn them into a support
mechanism for leaders on a day-to-day basis.”
